ACADEMIC TRACK ASSISTANT/ASSOCIATE PROFESSORS/FULL PROFESSORS in BIOMEDICAL SCIENCES, BIOINFORMATICS and BIOMEDICAL INFORMATICS of ZJE Institute

The Zhejiang University-University of Edinburgh(ZJE) Institute seeks to recruit outstandingassistant/associate/full professors to join a dynamic team developinginnovative teaching and research in Biomedical Sciences.

ZJE Institute, established by two world-leadinguniversities at the new International Campus in Haining, provides stateof the art research and teaching facilities, as well as ahighly competitive salary and start-up package.Applicants must be able to demonstrate their potential to develop asindependent research investigators, as evidenced by publications in leadinginternational peer-reviewed journals and the ability to attract externalresearch funding or already have a track record of success in research.Post-holders will also have a passion for research-led teaching and theabilities to be influential and innovative educators developing and deliveringteaching at both undergraduate and graduate levels for the next generation ofBiomedical scientists. TheInstitute offers two undergraduate 4-year dual award degree programmes inIntegrative Biomedical Sciences and Biomedical Informatics and a 4-year dualaward PhD programme in Integrative Biomedical Science.

The major researchthemes of ZJE institute are Regenerative Medicine& Stem Cells, Inflammation & Immunology, Infection & MolecularMedicine, Neuroscience and Cancer & Oncology. In this round, we particular welcome applications from individuals with a research track record and expertise in bio-informatics, medicalinformatics, infection and immunity and AMR, and regenerative medicine.

The posts require a doctoral degree in a relevant Biomedical Sciences/Bioinformatics/ BiomedicalInformatics or related discipline subject with a high command of bothspoken and written English.

The posts will be located at ZJE Institute inHaining and the contract of employment will be held with Zhejiang University. Academictrack is for six years in the first instance. Subject to asatisfactory formal review at the end of year five it is intended that the post-holder will thenmove to an academic open-ended contract at the end of year six.

CANDIDATE INFORMATION

These posts are associated with the establishment of Zhejiang University- University of Edinburgh (ZJE) Institute at Haining in China. They are aimedat individuals of the highest potential who have either begun to establish areputation for quality research in their discipline and who have a provencommitment to university level learning and teaching or are existing leaders intheir field.

Appointees will have a research interest in a BiomedicalSciences/Bioinformatics/Biomedical Informatics discipline and/or in highereducation development and practice. The main, but not necessarily exclusive,research themes of ZJE Institute will be in Stem Cells & RegenerativeMedicine, Inflammation & Immunology, Infection, Molecular Medicine, Cancer& Oncology and Neuroscience,Bioinformatics. Post-holders will be encouraged todevelop research collaborations with colleagues within ZJE Institute as well aswith investigators located in the partner Institutions in Edinburgh andZhejiang.

The appointees will be involved in the development and delivery ofinnovative undergraduate programmes in Integrative Biomedical Sciences and Biomedical Informatics that aredelivered in English at International Campus of Zhejiang University at Haining.This programme is delivered jointly by staff from ZJE Institute, ZhejiangUniversity and the University of Edinburgh. Post holders will develop ateaching portfolio depending on their expertise and experience.

Academic Track Assistant/ Associate Professorship posts initially arefor a term of 6 years, within which, subject to satisfactory formal review post-holderswill transfer to an open-ended contract. The posts are available with immediateeffect and it is expected that successful applicants will be in post by nolater than December, 2019.

The contract of employment will be held with Zhejiang University. Annualsalary and allowances for Academic Track Assistant Professors will start from$70,000. Annual salary and allowances for Academic Track Associate Professorswill start from $100,000. Annual salary and allowances for Full Professors willstart from $140,000. Generous start-up packages, between 2 and 5M RMB appropriateto the discipline are available.

Job Details

Job Title: Academic TrackAssistant/Associate Professor/Full Professor.

Job Purpose: Deliver an independent research programme that complementsresearch priorities of ZJE Institute, evidenced by publications in leadinginternational peer-reviewed journals and depending on level of appointment, theability to (or potential to) or demonstration of proven ability to obtainexternal competitive grant funding.

To develop, deliver and assess undergraduate courses that form part ofthe undergraduate degree programmes at International Campus, Haining, China,run jointly by the University of Edinburgh and Zhejiang University. Contributeto the academic administration of teaching activities and, once established,undertake further duties such as course or programme organiser. Contribute tothe development of new teaching and research opportunities within ZJU-UoEInstitute.

 

Main Responsibilities

1. Research: Deliver an independent,externally-funded research program.

2.Organise, deliver and assessundergraduate and postgraduate courses within own and related subject areas toallow ZJE Institute to deliver required teaching.

3.Supervise and assess undergraduateand MSc dissertations and supervision of PhD students.

4.Provide academic support and adviceto students.

5.Contribute to the academicadministration of teaching activities to ensure the continual development ofthe course and maintain synergies with other courses.

 

Knowledge, Skills &Experience

Essential

* PhD (orequivalent) in a Biomedical Sciences/Bioinformatics/Biomedical Informaticsdiscipline.

*  Proven track record in research, evidenced bypublications in leading international journals and evidence of obtaining (ofhaving the capability to obtain) external research funding. 

*  Extensive experience of developing andapplying theory, models, techniques and analytical methods as appropriate tothe field of research. 

*  Experience in teaching in a Higher EducationInstitution with evidence of (or capability of) innovation in teaching deliveryand assessment. 

*  Good project management skills and experienceof co-ordinating resources other than self (e.g. people, budgets). 

*  Excellent communication, presentation andorganisational skills in English.

Desirable

*  A postgraduate teaching qualification.

 

Dimensions

The post holder will be expected to establish and maintain a program ofresearch in a subject area relevant to ZJE Institute and that could lead tocollaborative research initiative with staff at Zhejiang University and theUniversity of Edinburgh.

The post has a direct relationship with the establishment of an Honoursdegree programme with awards from both Zhejiang University and the Universityof Edinburgh that started in 2016. The programme will develop towards an intakeof 150 undergraduates each year by 2019-20. 
The post holder must be able to deliver teaching, in English, at all levels inone or more subject areas represented by the portfolio of programmes in theBiomedical Sciences and Biomedical Informatics programmes to be offered at ZJEInstitute.

The contract of employment will be held with Zhejiang University and theappointment and conditions will be governed by the employment laws of China andthe policies and practices of Zhejiang University.
